Economic well-being & financial capability

Economic well-being and financial capability is one of the two non-statutory programmes of study for PSHE education. Increasingly the skills of business studies teachers in particular are being sought to give support in this area of the curriculum. The document that can be downloaded from the right gives 20 examples of how business studies and economics teachers can support the teaching of financial capability.

Economic well-being is also the fifth planned outcome of the Every Child Matters agenda. Business studies and economics lend themselves particularly well to meeting this strand of ECM. Research has produced much evidence that understanding EWB supports students' learning in other areas.

This section aims to offer you resources for the teaching of economic well-being, by addressing EWB through aspects of careers development, financial capability and entrepreurship.

As a starting point, teachers may find it useful to download EBEA guidance on economic well-being and financial capability. It is offered here as a PowerPoint or a printer friendly version.

Also available to download from the right hand column are the  2010 report on Personal, social, health and economic education in schools which covers economic well-being and financial capability and the 2008 Ofsted report Developing financially capable young people. Many of the referenced links in this latter document are no longer functional as a result of changes to Government websites made following the 2010 election. However, the document still has much useful and relevant data.

The link on the left to EWB and enterprise in the primary sector shows examples of good practice at in the teaching of Economic Wellbeing at primary level. The material in that unit is suitable for enhancing teachers' own knowledge of of EWB at all levels as well as providing ideas suitable for adapting for the secondary classroom.
