Generic issues for new teachers - Exploring the importance and role of creativity in teaching business studies

The objectives of this unit are:-

  • to develop an understanding of the place of creativity in teaching and learning in business studies
  • to consider how business studies can be taught creatively
  • to consider how business studies can be taught for creativity

This unit is based on a chapter from a PhD thesis focused on creativity in teaching business studies (Jacek Brant - 2006). The chapter title is ‘Exploring the importance and role of creativity in teaching business studies’. It considers definitions of creativity, the link between creativity and intelligence, the links with ontology and epistemology and finally the conditions for creativity. The reader could follow up a large number of references but reflection on own practice is probably a better use of the three hours notional time allowed for the unit. The core theme is that business studies can and should be learnt as a creative subject and can be taught to enable this although it sometimes does not happen that way.

Dr Jacek Brant is the Chair of the EBEA and a regular contributor to our annual conference on aspects of teaching business studies and economics.
