GCSE Economics - National and international economy
Examiners complain that this is an area of the syllabus which appears to be either poorly taught and/or poorly understood by many candidates compared with the rest of the course. Evidence shows that one significant factor is that students are not given sufficient stimulus in terms of real data etc to enhance their understanding of the issues.
Potential outcomes of this are that candidates:
- are confused about, or do not know, the basic concepts/ideas
- cannot apply knowledge to issues in the questions
- are unsure of the relative merits of government policies
- fail to make good use, or to show understanding of statistical, or numerical, data
- perform poorly
This unit aims to make suggestions for approaches which could be adopted to help overcome these problems. This has been done through providing examples for the syllabus areas of inflation and free trade and protection. The suggestions for classroom strategies, theory support and methods of assessment could equally be applied to other areas of the syllabus.
