EBEA's response to the DfE Review of PSHE
Economic education in the context of PSHE is about empowering young people as consumers, producers and citizens. It should help them make sense of the world they live in, understand the economic choices they make and effectively prepare them for their future adult lives.
It consists of three interrelated components: economic and business understanding, personal finance education and the development of enterprise/employment skills. It is important that economic education is not seen solely as "teaching young people how to manage their money", vitally important though this is. Young people need to understand the wider economic context in which financial decisions are made. For example, they need to have some understanding of the impact of inflation on savings and an appreciation of how interest rates may change over time. They also need to have an understanding of spending decisions and how these may affect others and the environment.
