Working in ITT - Observing lessons
Lesson observations provide invaluable feedback for trainees on their performance. Not only does this feedback tell them how well they are doing and is the kind of feedback they are fequently most anxious to get, it also plays an important part in assessing trainees' formative and summative development. The feedback points out what they are doing well and how they could improve.
It is the responsibility of both the course subject leader AND the school subject mentor to ensure that this task is undertaken regularly and used sensitively in providing developmental feedback to the trainee. Lesson observations provide a written form of evidence towards meeting the standards for QtT.
The example available for download shows one method of recording notes compiled by a tutor on the performance of a trainee teacher. Using the example that has been given you might like to think about other ways in which the style of observation feedback could be improved and how it compares with other styles of feedback that you have witnessed.
