Teaching and Learning for trainees - Managing behaviour

Objectives of this unit
  • To identify why lessons could go wrong for trainee teachers
  • To enable trainee teachers to find their own solutions to managing behaviour
  • To understand the importance of including how behaviour will be managed in lesson plans
When planning lessons, trainee teachers generally expect to develop their own subject knowledge for teaching and to create resources to support student learning. They do not, however, automatically assume that they need to devote equally careful thought and preparation to how they are going to manage behaviour and include this in their lesson plans. The purpose of this unit is to convince trainee teachers of the importance of planning to avoid situations where learning is not taking place; its purpose is not to deal with serious behaviour issues. Trainee teachers should always be encouraged to seek advice and guidance from their mentor and to be fully conversant with school and departmental behaviour policies.

The support material for this unit has been has been broken into three sections:

Section 1
Generic issues pertaining to managing behaviour
This section consists of three activities
Activity 1.1 Identifying problem behaviours
Activity 1.2 Causes of problem behaviours

This section consists of three activities
Activity 2.1 Planning to avoid problems
Activity 2.2 Agree or disagree?

The activities are provided both in Word so you can personalise them for your own use and as pdf (printer friendly) documents. The word version of the list is suitable for passing on to trainee teachers in electronic format as it contains some useful websites with active hyperlinks.

There is also a further document entitled "Out of the frying pan and into the…" which is a series of
reflections on behaviour and personnel management from a newly appointed head of department and would be useful for trainee teachers to share experiences and hints for success
